Paul Lewis, Works for Piano Vol. 2

24 September 2012, 11:05

Following in the footsteps of his album of Schubert piano sonatas, Paul Lewis' Works for Piano, Vol. 2 is another all-Schubert affair, capturing the brooding spirit of the Romantic composer. Classic FM Drive Featured Album, 24 September 2012.

Setting the tone with Schubert's majestic C major Wanderfantasie, Lewis' interpretation of the music captures every nuance of emotion. Moments of darkness are counterbalanced with light-fingered passages, but it still makes for a pretty intense listen.

You might recognise the cheeky Moments Musicaux, or some of the ever-popular Impromptus with their singing melodies. There may be no vocal line, but these piano pieces are like songs without words, with flowing tunes and beautiful accompanying harmony.

If you're looking for a slice of gorgeous no-holds-barred Romanticism, this album is for you.
