In a special programme from Aldeburgh, Joan Bakewell met the women in Britten's life: his niece, his nurse, Peter Pears' niece - and their concert agent, and their housekeeper, Heather Grant.
2013 marked the centenary of the birth of the great British composer Benjamin Britten. Classic FM celebrated with special programmes and online features.
Benjamin Britten was a composer of extraordinary skill and originality. He was also the finest opera composer that England has ever produced, singlehandedly reviving an art form that had been dormant in the British Isles for some two centuries.
For his centenary year, Classic FM offered an outstanding special tribute programme, Benjamin Britten's Women with Joan Bakewell - broadcast in November 2013 around the time of Britten's birthday and repeated at Christmas.
There was also a wealth of supporting features on this website including galleries of rare pictures and behind the scenes photographs of Britten's home, The Red House at Aldeburgh.
