Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
Rolando Villazón - Treasures Of Bel Canto (Trailer)
David Mellor presents his selection of the best of the recently released and re-released classical albums.
Among David's choices this week are a new album from the great Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon. His Treasures of Bel Canto sees him returning to the roots of the Italian romantic vocal tradition with a selection of exquisite melodies from the greatest of Italian opera composers including Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, and Verdi.
The conductor Norman Del Mar left a great legacy of recordings of British music. He recorded his version of Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Pomp and Circumstance Marches with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 40 years ago in 1975. It’s just been re-issued and David samples its delights this evening.
Also tonight, there’s a great new budget release of Beethoven Piano Sonatas performed by Boris Giltburg, a superb re-issue of a concert of Wagner’s arias given in 1963 by the great soprano Birgit Nelson, and the fine young pianist Daniil Trifonov tackles Rachmaninov’s Variations.
