Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David Mellor casts an eye - and both ears - over the latest classical albums.
This week David reviews a wide selection of recently released and re-released albums, including tonight a first play on Classic FM for a special live recording of the season opening recital at London’s Wigmore Hall from September 2014 featuring the superb American mezzo Joyce DiDonato accompanied on the piano quite brilliantly by Sir Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The Times described the pair as “mezzo diva supreme” and “golden maestro and piano accompanist to the stars”.
Also tonight some Italian opera favourites transcribed for wind ensemble played by the European Wind Soloists, and an unusual mix of Japanese and American music for guitar played by Aaron Larget-Caplan.
There are some timeless performances of British choral classics - Elgar's The Kingdom and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time - to rediscover, directed by the great Richard Hickox.
