The Full Works Concert - Wednesday 27 August, 8pm

Dvořák's Violin Concerto, played by Julia Fischer, is a highlight of tonight's Concert.

Jane Jones starts the Full Works Concert with a gallop tonight, in Suppé’s Light Cavalry Overture. Also on the programme, a light, bright Mozart symphony and Julia Fischer’s superb recording of Dvořák's Violin Concerto.

Dvořák was inspired to write his concerto after having met the great violinist Joachim in 1878 and composed the work with the intention of dedicating it to him. However, when Dvořák finished the concerto in 1879, Joachim became skeptical about it. He objected to Dvořák's playing with some of the rules of structure that other classical concertos conformed to. It is also thought that the violinist was upset with the repetitions found in the third movement. Joachim never said anything outright, however, but he never actually performed the piece.
