Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 18 October 2014, 7pm

Howard Shore's birthday is one of Alex James's classical music dates and anniversaries for the coming week.

Tonight Alex begins with a 'happy birthday' to Lord of the Rings movie maestro Howard Shore, who turns 68 today.

We'll also be hearing a wonderful concerto by Brahms, premiered in Cologne on this day in 1887 with the composer himself conducting, and we'll mark the 110th anniversary of the first performance of Mahler's Symphony No.5.

Looking ahead over the rest of the week, Alex explains the reason why Mrs. Rossini wrote to a newspaper about her husband's erratic behaviour, and celebrates Dvorak's first concert on American soil.

Also a 10-year-old Debussy starts learning the piano, and Borodin premieres his opera Prince Igor in St. Petersburg - with a little help from his fellow Russian composers Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov.
