After nine months of piano practice, YouTuber Tyler Oakley posted an update of his progress – and his pal Troye Sivan tore him apart in one brutal tweet.
Tyler Oakley, one of YouTube’s earliest stars, has been learning how to play the piano. The vlogger and LGBT activist started taking lessons in January and has been posting regular updates for his fans ever since.
“I had always wanted to play but I never knew how and then I was like you know what? It’s never too late to learn something new!” he says in the video above.
On Friday 13 September, Oakley posted a video of himself playing the opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (“In nine months, I’m playing Beethoven – like who knew?!”).
In a reply to the tweet, singer Troye Sivan – named by Time magazine as one of the Most Influential Teens of 2014 – wrote: “Are you reading sheet music?! You’re getting so good!”
Oakley wrote: “Yes I am!! Let’s duet I am almost good”, to which Sivan replied:
“No but keep going!”
So, to answer the question on everyone’s lips…
Hey, for only nine months of lessons, Oakley’s playing is solid.
He mainly just needs to relax his wrists a bit and not rely too much on his thumbs for fingering. But that comes with time.
There’s also some work to be done on the tempo and metre of the ‘song’, but all in all, we’ll give Oakley’s playing a big ol’ thumbs up.
The YouTube star says at the end of the video: “I just feel like it is so much fun to learn something new, especially when you thought you’re too old to learn it.
“If you’ve ever wanted to try something and you feel like you’re too old, you’re not.
“Start today – and a year from now you’ll wish you started a year ago.”
