La La Land has equalled the all-time record for Oscar nominations, with nods in 14 categories in the 2017 Academy Awards, including Best Original Soundtrack.

Hurwitz's score for the hugely popular musical will be among the front-runners for the coveted Best Original Soundtrack prize, but it faces stiff competition. The full list of soundtrack nominations is:

Jackie - Mica Levi

La La Land - Justin Hurwitz

Lion - Dustin O'Halloran / Hauschka

Moonlight - Nicholas Britell

Passengers - Thomas Newman

Here's what our Saturday Night at the Movies presenter, Andrew Collins, made of the nomination:

Pundits may be surprised to learn that Johann Johannsson's lauded score for sci-fi film Arrival has been snubbed, but it was in fact rendered ineligible due to significant inclusion of pre-existing music by Max Richter.

Elsewhere, Oscars regular John Williams failed to pick up a nomination for his score for Steven Spielberg's The BFG, while Thomas Newman racked up his 13th 'Best Score' soundtrack nomination with Passengers. Despite his many nominations, Newman is still yet to bag an Oscar.

Meryl Streep's turn as opera 'singer' Florence Foster Jenkins in the film of the same name has also earned her a Best Actress nomination.
