Piano tops musical Christmas present list

The piano is the instrument that the UK population would most like to learn, according to a survey carried out by the PRS for Music. In the same survey, 70% of the population stated they regretted not having learnt a musical instrument.

The piano gained 34% of the vote in a poll for the most desired musical Christmas present. The trumpet came second, at 14% and the electric guitar third, with 13%. Over 1,500 UK respondents completed the survey.

PRS for Music is a not-for-profit copyright and royalty collection organisation which represents 60,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS for Music, comments on the survey: ‘giving someone the gift of learning a musical instrument is one of the most rewarding presents that can ever be offered’.

Electropop sensation, Little Boots, confirms: ‘Music was, and always has been everything to me, and especially as a child it provided an amazing focus, a place for me to be creative as well as a way to release my feelings and emotions. Playing an instrument is also an incredible social tool, enabling you to meet other like-minded people and enjoy the experience of creating and playing together.’ She learnt the piano, flute, clarinet and harp.
