More than 20,000 children were taught musical instruments in Northants schools in the past year. The best get picked for the County Youth Orchestra.
There are some 300 musical ensembles in Northamptonshire that young musicians can be selected from for the Northamptonshire County Youth Orchestra.
"We've managed to maintain our presence in schools in Northamptonshire to quite a considerable degree," says Richard Roper, the Orchestra's conductor at this year's Music for Youth Schools Prom.
"Music's flourishing in Northamptonshire," he tells Classic FM's Tim Lihoreau.
The Orchestra, one of the senior groups run by the Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust, plays a wide range of music and performs concerts regularly throughout the year. Over the summer they enjoyed an extremely successful concert tour to Germany.
At the Schools Prom they are playing Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis which takes themes by Weber and gives them a modern, and at times jazz-influenced, twist. The second movement focuses on each section of the orchestra and the fourth movement is a lively march with a triumphant close.
