5. Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
Schoenberg was called up at the age of 42, leaving behind many unfinished works and ideas. When an officer demanded if he was “this notorious Schoenberg”, the composer replied, “Beg to report, sir, yes. Nobody wanted to be, someone had to be, so I let it be me.” Schoenberg is pictured here, in the Austro-Hungarian army (bottom row, second from right.)
