Gorgeous new illustrations mark the 150th anniversary of 'Alice in Wonderland'
To mark the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's classic later this year, 13 contemporary composers have written short pieces inspired by sections of the book. Artist Emily Carew Woodard has made a set of brand-new illustrations to accompany the music. You can hear the music live across the UK this year and the new album will be released in November.

1. Golden afternoon
"Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, 'and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice 'without pictures or conversations?'" 2. A white rabbit
"Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it". Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

3. Pool of tears
Alice cries so much she creates a pool of tears – and meets a mouse while she's swimming through it. "I wish I hadn't cried so much!' said Alice, as she swam about, trying to find her way out. 'I shall be punished for it now, I suppose, by being drowned in my own tears! That will be a queer thing, to be sure! However, everything is queer to-day." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

4. A Caucus-Race
"There was no 'One, two, three, and away,' but they began running when they liked, and left off when they liked, so that it was not easy to know when the race was over. However, when they had been running half an hour or so, and were quite dry again, the Dodo suddenly called out 'The race is over!'" Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

5. DRINK ME
"She went on growing, and growing, and very soon had to kneel down on the floor: in another minute there was not even room for this, and she tried the effect of lying down with one elbow against the door, and the other arm curled round her head. Still she went on growing, and, as a last resource, she put one arm out of the window, and one foot up the chimney." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

6. Advice from a caterpillar
"Her eyes immediately met those of a large caterpillar, that was sitting on the top with its arms folded, quietly smoking a long hookah, and taking not the smallest notice of her or of anything else." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

7. The Cheshire Cat
"The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good-natured, she thought: still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

8. The Mad Hatter's tea party
"There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: a Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and talking over its head." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

9. The Queen's Croquet-Ground
"A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden: the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red. Alice thought this a very curious thing." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

10. The Queen of Hearts
"The Queen turned crimson with fury, and, after glaring at her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed 'Off with her head! Off—' " Credit: Emily Carew Woodard

13. A pack of cards!
"'Who cares for you?' said Alice, (she had grown to her full size by this time.) 'You're nothing but a pack of cards!' At this the whole pack rose up into the air, and came flying down upon her." Credit: Emily Carew Woodard
