The Italian opera composer died 90 years ago on 29 November while still writing Turandot. At the opera’s premiere, in the middle of Act 3, the conductor Toscanini stopped and laid down his baton. He turned to the audience and announced: "Here the opera ends, because at this point the maestro died.”
