Ballet companies continue to add their own variations to this much-loved ballet. Russian and Chinese ballet companies in particular often stage endings similar to the original, happy ending. A 2006 performance by the New York City Ballet (with additional choreography by Peter Martins) saw the lovers survive, but were still kept apart by Siegfried’s betrayal.
