Pollini's compelling Schumann

A reissued disc of pianist Maurizio Pollini's compelling performance of Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze is one of the best recordings you'll hear

Composer: Schumann
Repertoire: Davidsbündlertänze
Artists: Maurizio Pollini (piano)
Rating:  4/5
Genre: Instrumental
Label: DG 471 3682

Reissued as a two-disc set, these recordings from 2001 and 2002 contain some of the most compelling Schumann playing I’ve heard in years. Pollini, often thought of as a cerebral pianist, is thoroughly engaged in the turbulent emotions of the Davidsbündlertänze and Concert (the first version of his F minor Piano Sonata). The rarely heard Chopinesque Allegro and the late Songs of Dawn are complemented by a superbly articulated account of Kreisleriana.
