You know when you just want to understand something, with no fuss and no mucking around? Well, Leonard Bernstein might be the most eloquent music educator we’ve had in centuries - and this video shows him at his finest:
As you can see, he deftly leads us from the very birth of primordial, monotonal music all the way up to the chromatic experiments of the 20th century. And all he has is a great script and a piano.
