Bach played on the piano has made a welcome comeback in recent years. Bernard Roberts, who has already recorded the ‘48’ and the Partitas, deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as András Schiff and Murray Perahia. He plays these sequences of dance movements with infinite grace and – thanks to minimal pedalling – clarity. He embellishes the repeats lightly and his rubato never interrupts the basic flow of the music. A fine achievement.
