Sounds of the Sea is the brand new double album brought to you by Classic FM and The Royal National Lifeboat Institution
This wonderful new double album includes more than two hours of classical music inspired by the sea.
We asked Classic FM listeners and RNLI supporters to vote online from a specially selected catalogue of beautiful, moving and dramatic classical pieces associated with the sea – choosing the piece of the music that brought the sea to life in their eyes.
The winning pieces were then compiled to make this beautiful CD.
Over ten thousand votes were cast. The most voted-for tracks included Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Khachaturian’s Adagio of Spartacus and Phyrgia, and Debussy’s La Mer to name a few.
Also, at least £1.84 from the sale of each Sounds of the Sea CD is being donated to the RNLI, to enable them to continue the exceptional work that they do.
Sir Tim Rice, who supports the RNLI, has written the foreword for the album. He says:
"When people listen to this music, I hope that it conjures up wonderful images of the ocean and of the courageous lifeboat crews who save lives at sea. However, I also hope it reminds you that the RNLI is a charity, and reliant on public donations. The vital work of the lifeboat crews can only be carried out because of your support, and you too are part of an incredible, inspirational story, one that I hope continues for centuries more."
Last year, the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews launched 8,713 times, rescuing 8,313 people and saving 309 lives. Since the charity was founded in 1824, its volunteer crews and, more recently, lifeguards, have saved over 139,000 lives – none of which could be funded without the generosity of its supporters.
