Sergei Rachmaninov (1873–1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninov, it seemed, could do nothing right by most of his contemporary critics' and composers' standards. As a person, he appeared somewhat cold and aloof - Stravinsky once called him "a six-and-a-half foot tall scowl".
Rachmaninov is well known for his Piano Concerto’s. His Piano Concerto No.2 is a favourite of classical music lovers across the world. Indeed when we combined together all votes from the past 16 years of our annual Classic FM Hall of Fame listeners’ poll we’ve found that this piece was the winner at the top of the chart by quite some margin.
