The LSO's principal flautist and host of The Show Must Go On on Classic FM, Gareth Davies, lets us in on some orchestral secrets
The Show Must Go On
The Show Must Go On
On Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 8-10pm, Gareth Davies - the London Symphony Orchestra's Principal Flautist - tells the story of the LSO's 1912 tour of the U.S.A. and compares it with the orchestra's tours to America, Japan and a range of other destinations exactly 100 years later.
Listen again to this show
Since its foundation in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra has taken its music around the world. Now, hear the remarkable inside story of one orchestra across two centuries.
The LSO's Principal Flute Gareth Davies tells two tales of life on the road: the LSO's first American tour of 1912 and its contemporary travels in the U.S.A. in 2012.
Gareth brings to life the groundbreaking 1912 expedition, when the orchestra was due to sail on the Titanic. He will also be joined by the LSO's Music Director, Valery Gergiev, and Planning Director, Sue Mallett – who's worked for the LSO for over 40 years. She shares some fascinating and, at times, hilarious stories of life on tour.
All the music featured is performed by the LSO – ranging from their very first recording in 1913, to some of their recent releases. This promises to be a heartwarming, humorous and revealing programme presented by a man who is – quite literally – at the centre of the action.
