The World's Greatest Music
Ben Fogle's tour of hidden Britain took us to Wales, the land not just of song but of great music in all forms
Arguably Italy's greatest ever tenor has an unlikely link to Wales. Back in 1955 the accomplished amateur choir, the Societa Corale Gioachino Rossini, travelled from their home in Modena to the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Amongst the Italian choir's were a father and his 19-year-old son – Fernando and Luciano Pavarotti. The choir won first prize, an achievement and an experience that etched itself in the young Pavarotti's memory forever. As he was fond of saying, that 1955 Eisteddfod was 'the most memorable experience of my life.'
