Although he expressed Scotland's musical character to perfection in his four-movement fantasy on Scottish folk melodies, Bruch never actually visited the country. The piece wasn’t even premiered in Edinburgh; that honour went south of the border to Liverpool, where Bruch was the director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society.
