As the new century dawned, the great conductor Thomas Beecham suggested that Birmingham should have an orchestra and a place to put it, as, by then, the Town Hall had already fallen into disrepair. In 1920 he got at least part of his wish, with the creation of the City of Birmingham Orchestra. And who was the conductor at its first Town Hall performance? None other than Wolves fan Edward Elgar!
