Spitfire Prelude and Fugue composer William Walton was born in Oldham in 1902. His father was a music teacher who’d trained at the Royal Manchester College of Music under Charles Halle. He saw potential in young William and sent him to Christ Church Cathedral School in Oxford to try for a scholarship, having clean forgotten he'd spent the train fare in the pub.
