Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David Mellor casts an ear over the best classical albums, including brilliant Beethoven piano sonatas.
Among David's choices tonight is the latest selection of Beethoven Piano Sonatas played by the brilliant Angela Hewitt. Her recordings have been universally lauded for her formidably intelligent approach. That's now applied to four further works spanning the composer's career.
Also tonight, David reviews the third of six volumes of Sibelius orchestral works with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leif Segerstam. The focus of this album is Sibelius's incidental music and transcriptions. The main piece, Pelléas et Mélisande has often been recorded but is seen here in the context of his other theatrical pieces, emphasizing a different side of Sibelius as a theatre composer.
David also reviews the No.1 best-selling compilation album, Classically Chilled , and Hymns by YouTube a cappella sensation, Sam Robson.
