Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David kicks off the new year with a centenary commemoration for Alexander Scriabin.
It's performed by Yevgeny Sudbin and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Andrew Litton. Sudbin's recordings of Scriabin have received high praise and here he is well supported by the Bergen Philharmonic and their chief conductor Andrew Litton.
David also revisits a singer who he admired when he was a youth - the bass-baritone John Shirley-Quirk who passed away in 2014. A re-issue of his album English Song includes Vaughan Williams ' Songs of Travel with words by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Also on the move are the Aurora Orchestra who have been described as the 'new Academy of St Martin in the Fields '. They've recorded the original 13-instrument arrangement of Aaron Copland's timeless Appalachian Spring.
