Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
Andreas Ottensamer - Brahms: Two Waltzes (+ English interview)
Brahms, his Hungarian influences, and a clarinet combine together to be David's Album of the Week.
David Mellor 's Album of the Week is a brilliant new recording from the young Austrian clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer , who is principle clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic. Brahms: The Hungarian Connection sees Ottensamer teaming up with a distinguished string quartet led by the superb violinist Leonidas Kavakos. They play Brahms's Clarinet Quintet and a selection of Hungarian and gypsy works that would have inspired Brahms.
"A very fine album indeed," says David. "Don't miss it."
Also tonight, David features an unusual Connoisseur's Choice from the pianist Kirill Gerstein getting to grips with the original version of Tchaikovsky 's Piano Concerto, a new take on French choral music and a glorious recording of Mozart piano sonatas by Marc-André Hamelin.
