Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
This week David showcases the works of two great Soviet masters.
Tonight David enjoys rediscovering performances by the great Soviet pianist Sviatoslav Richter and his fellow countryman, violinist David Oistrakh, who are both celebrated on some newly repackaged and remastered recordings.
Also tonight, David casts an ear over the latest release from soprano Diana Damrau, in which she explores 19th century Italian arias. In particular Damrau demonstrates how the precision, refinement and intensity of expression required for 'bel canto' operas, also applied to Bellini and Donizetti's successors, Verdi, Puccini and Leoncavallo.
And Vladimir Ashkenazy plays the music of Scriabin in a reflective new collection of piano miniatures, marking this year’s centenary of Scriabin’s death.
