Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
It's the 150th anniversary year of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen and David has something special to celebrate.
There are some real hidden gems to uncover tonight in the New Releases Show.
David is particularly excited about a complete set of the symphonies of Carl Nielsen, who was born 150 years ago this year, released on the Chandos label. Among the composer’s most performed works, these symphonies also reflect his musical emancipation from his early influences - of folk music, Bach, Mozart, and even Brahms, Schumann, and Grieg - and his later radical departure from traditional styles.
David also showcases a superb new album featuring the cellist Jamie Walton playing music by Glazunov, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. There’s more from Tchaikovsky as Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in his 5th symphony. And there’s the chance to rediscover Sir Malcom Sargent's cracking Gilbert and Sullivan recordings in a new boxed set.
