Verdi Aida: Anja Harteros, Jonas Kaufmann, Erwin Schrott recorded in Rome for Warner Classics
This week, David showcases a superb new recording of Verdi’s grand opera,Aida.
Starring Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann, this superb new recording of Aida is conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano who puts his brilliant Italian orchestra - the Academy of Santa Cecilia - to work playing a great Italian opera, a genre which is not part of their usual repertoire. The album was also a high new entry in last week’s Classic FM Chart.
Also tonight, as part of Classic FM's Southbank Centre Week, David gives you another chance to hear this week’s Drive Featured Album - a re-issue of a superb live performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Klaus Tennstedt , who never made a studio recording of the piece.
There’s also more thrilling music to discover from Sibelius in his 150th anniversary year, as well as deliciously brooding central European string quartets from Smetana and Janacek, played by the Takacs Quartet.
