Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David Mellor casts an eye - and his ears - over the latest crop of classical music albums.
On this week's show, David samples the Britten Sinfonia's acclaimed new recording of oboe music by Vaughan Williams and James MacMillan, featuring the outstanding soloist Nicholas Daniel. He won Young Musician of the Year 35 years ago at the age of 18, playing the same Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto – and his playing sounds just as fresh and virtuosic today at the age of 53.
David also delves into Volume 65 of Hyperion’s celebrated Romantic Piano Concertos series. The all-Spanish programme features Albéniz's Concierto fantástico, which owes much to Schumann and Chopin, with the additional fizz of the Iberian peninsula. Granados never actually wrote his piano concerto, so the pianist here – Melani Mestre – has done it for him based on the composer's sketches.
And listen out for a soprano whose new recording definitely suggests she's set for a glittering career.
