David picks a superb new collection of Rachmaninov's greatest works.

Tonight, among David's pick of the new and re-releases, there's a stunning Rachmaninov collection by the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Paavo Järvi. The album features two of the composer's major works from the final decade of his life, complemented by two pieces from the 1890s. Rachmaninov's Symphony No 3, written in 1936, is filled with nostalgia for the Russia he had left for Switzerland; the haunting Symphonic Dances were written in America in 1940. Also on the album are the Caprice Bohémien , the symphonic poem Le Rocher , and the celebrated Vocalise , originally conceived in 1915 for voice and piano and later arranged for orchestra by the composer.

More Rachmaninov comes tonight in the form of piano duets. After more than 20 years since their last recording of piano duets on Chandos, Louis Lortie and Hélène Mercier have come together again to perform a piano arrangement of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances and other pieces.

Among David's other choices, listen out for Brahms's Fourth Symphony given majestic treatment by the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer.
