Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David Mellor casts an eye - and his ears - over the latest musical offerings.
On David Mellor 's menu this week, there's a chance to hear three tracks from Stephen Hough 's not-yet-released recording of piano music by Grieg. Named by The Economist as one of 20 Living Polymaths, Hough s a true renaissance man – a top concert pianist, writer, composer and painter. He has won global acclaim for his outstanding interpretations of the piano repertoire.
His latest album, playing 27 of Edvard Grieg's Lyric Pieces – to be released on 5 May – is not to be missed. And David lays claim to planting the idea for this album in the pianist's head over a dinner in New York.
"How marvellously Stephen plays these lyric pieces," David says.
Listen out also for a fine new recording of the Brahms and Bruch Violin Concertos by David Garrett, an unusual choral collection released to mark the 150 anniversary of the birth of Sibelius, Shostakovich's Piano Quintet with the Tackacs Quartet and a cracking recording of Handel's Messiah.
