Katherine ventures into 18th and 19th century Europe to discover three of the great composers of the Classical Era – Haydn, Schubert and Mendelssohn.
Louis Spohr was a German contemporary of Schubert’s who wrote four clarinet concertos and, believe it or not, invented the violin chin rest! Spohr is one of those composers who was held in very high regard during his lifetime but fell into obscurity after his death. 'So it’s wonderful that we are now getting to hear again some of his beautiful works, especially the four clarinet concertos,' says Katherine.
