The Full Works Concert - Tuesday 4 February 2014: Great British Performers

Anne-Marie Minhall presents the second of her Great British Performers concerts, including performances from Stephen Hough, Bryn Terfel and Chloe Hanslip.

The second of Anne-Marie Minhall's concerts of Great British Performers kicks off with perhaps the finest horn player that this country ever produced. Dennis Brain was largely credited for popularizing the horn as a solo classical instrument. With the collaboration of Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonia Orchestra, he produced what many still consider to be the definitive recordings of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos. Tonight we hear the first concerto.

One of today's greatest pianists, Stephen Hough (pictured) is an ambassador for British musical excellence all around the world. Tonight we hear him playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.2 in G major Opus 44.

The City of London Sinfonia was founded by the conductor Richard Hickox in 1971. It performs regularly at Cadogan Hall and St Paul's Cathedral and is also the resident orchestra at Opera Holland Park. The CLS performs chamber orchestra and ensemble repertoire from the Baroque period to the present day, and tonight we hear it playing Purcell's Chaconne in G minor for Strings.

One of Wales' finest exports, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sings the traditional Shenandoah before we hear the oboist Nicholas Daniel as soloist and director with the Peterborough String Orchestra in Alessandro Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D minor.

Tonight's concert ends with a performance by the young British violinist Chloe Hanslip who has been playing the violin for 24 years and she is still only 26. She plays the first Violin Concerto by Hubay, with Andrew Mogrelia conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
