Jane Jones presents a Concert featuring some of the best classical music releases.
Jane Jones takes her pick of the best of the autumn releases, including Joshua Bell directing Bach from the violin with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. It's the first time that Bell has recorded Bach's music which is a bit of a surprise since he has championed it for so long. "Bach's music makes you feel alive and it tells you about life and about the world in a way that nothing else can," Bell says. "Bach manages to take you through the entire range of human emotion."
October 2014 marked the silver anniversary of the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, founded by conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner with the aim of given an authentic reading to the music of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Now, 20 years after their acclaimed Beethoven symphonies recordings, John Eliot Gardiner and the orchestra continue to revisit this repertoire and this new release - of Symphonies 2 and 8 - follows the critically acclaimed release of Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7 , also recorded live at Cadogan Hall. Beethoven’s Eighth, which we hear tonight, is witty and playful.
The brilliant Julian Bliss continues to demonstrate his considerable talent by tackling one of the greatest works in the repertoire for his instrument - Mozart's evergreen Clarinet Concerto. The recording showcases the attractive qualities of Bliss's playing, rich and fruity in the showier passages, effortless in the demanding runs, and at the sublime moments, appropriately mellifluous and sonorous.
