The Full Works Concert - Tuesday 19 August, 8pm

A superb performance of Beethoven’s epic Choral Symphony is the climax of tonight's Concert.

Jane Jones has chosen a superb performance of Beethoven’s epic Choral Symphony as the major work on tonight's Concert.

Arguably the greatest symphony ever composed, the Ninth is the summit of Beethoven's achievements, a masterful musical celebration of the human race and a work that makes all who hear it feel better about life. And yet, the composer himself never actually heard it. When he conducted its premiere, he was famously unaware of the rapturous response. It took one of the musicians to alert him to the cheering audience – and that was only at the end of the second movement.

Also in tonight's Concert, we'll hear one of the greatest flautists of our time Emmanuel Pahud, as well as a piece that Gustav Holst composed for pupils at the school where he was Director of Music.

Gustav Holst: St. Paul's Suite Opus 29 No.2
Owain Arwel Hughes conducts Camerata Wales

Georg-Philipp Telemann: Concerto in A major for Flute, Violin and Cello
Emmanuel Pahud directs the Berlin Baroque Soloists from the flute

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.9 in D minor Opus 125
Soloists: Barbara Bonney, Birgit Remmert, Kurt Streit, Thomas Hampson
Simon Rattle conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and CBSO Chorus
