The Full Works Concert - Tuesday 18 November, 8pm

A superb new recording of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, conducted by Valery Gergiev, is the climax of tonight's concert of recent releases.

Jane Jones takes another dip into the autumn’s new releases including the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s latest disc of Prokofiev. Kirill Karabits and the BSO began their Prokofiev Symphony cycle with a release of the composer's Symphonies Nos. 3 and 7. It set a high standard and this second album in the series was eagerly awaited. This equally excellent chapter charts Prokofiev's development as a symphonist - from the charming but little-performed Sinfonietta, a close cousin to the first Classical Symphony - through to the strident, modernist Symphony No.2, composed in Paris in 1924. Tonight we hear the Symphony No.1. On it, Karabits gets an authentically Russian sound - vivid, bright and light of touch.

Listen out also for Valery Gergiev conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at the start of a much anticipated Berlioz cycle. Jane has chosen the unmissable Symphonie Fantastique. There are few orchestras with the music of Berlioz more thoroughly in their blood than the LSO, and here Valery Gergiev brings to bear his opulent interpretation of this landmark piece.
