The acclaimed Japanese-born conductor Seiji Ozawa turned 80 on 1 September. Tonight, from among his extensive back catalogue, David includes Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, and  Ravel's Pavane pour une infante defunte played by the orchestra Ozawa founded – the Saito Kinen Orchestra.  And there's also some Gershwin with the Berlin Philharmonic and Barber's Violin Concerto played by the recently turned 70-year old, Itzhak Perlman.

Another new octogenarian is the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who turns 80 on 11 September. Loved the world over as a composer of contemporary sacred music, Pärt works in a 'holy minimalist' style that employs his self-invented compositional technique, tintinnabuli

Tonight, David plays Pärt's most popular piece, Spiegel im Spiegel in an arrangement for violin and harp, as well as his setting of a Robbie Burns poem, his celebrated early work Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten and the Nunc Dimitis .
