Alex James's Date Night - Saturday 25 April 2015, 7pm

Alex James casts an eye - and his ears - over the coming week's musical anniversaries.

Hi Fi Fiedler Boston Pops

On this Saturday's show, Alex James celebrates birthdays for the conductors Zubin Mehta and Thomas Beecham, and the founding of the now-famous Boston Pops Orchestra.

The Boston Pops was created in 1885 as a second, popular sibling for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which was founded four years earlier. Consisting primarily of musicians from the BSO, they perform a Spring season of popular music and a holiday programme in December when the Boston Symphony Orchestra are on breaks. Identified with its long-time directors Arthur Fiedler and film composer John Williams , in the past the orchestra has recorded extensively, made frequent tours, and appeared regularly on television.

Also tonight, 'on this day' premieres for PucciniTurandot at La Scala, Milan in 1926 – and for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
