This week, Alex James begins by celebrating a variety of British composers and musicians who were all born on this day in history.

There's the conductor Edward Gardner, pictured, who's 40 today, and the pianist Stephen Hough , who's lighting 53 candles on his cake. And Benjamin Britten was born 101 years ago today.

Other events of note this week include a young Hector Berlioz making his conducting debut in Paris, the birth of the chart-topping minimalist composer Ludovico Einaudi , and the first ever concert at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.
