Ben Fogle visited Yorkshire on his Notes From Hidden Britain tour, an area with a long and glorious musical history
At the outbreak of the First World Butterworth joined up along with thousands of others. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1916, but shortly afterwards, at the age of 31, he was shot by a sniper during the battle of the Somme. Most of his manuscripts were left to fellow composer Vaughan Williams.
