Notes from Hidden Britain, presented by Ben Fogle - a musical road trip where we paused each week at a familiar region of Britain to examine its less familiar musical history.
Scotland is steeped in wonderful music, the best of it concentrated in this narrow but rich band, bang in the middle. Mendelssohn passed through here on his first visit to Scotland in 1829, on his way to inspiration at Fingal's Cave…. Chopin, too, on his 1848 UK tour. And because the roads in Scotland are superb, forgive me if later in our odyssey we take a detour and motor to historic Ayr as well - a town rich with musical associations, on the south west coast.
