The first performance of any Beethoven work in this country took place in Leicester thanks to local man, William Gardiner, a hosiery manufacturer, keen musician and amateur composer. Gardiner helped bring about this historic occasion after getting hold of a copy of the composer's score for Beethoven's Violin Trio in E flat from a chaplain who had fled French Revolution troops in Bonn, where Beethoven lived, with a copy of it in his bag.
