Choice for the Curious
Erik Satie: Piano Works
7044742 + 7044782
What David says: "This is a bargain price EMI box set containing all of Satie’s Piano music played by Ado Ciccolini. Satie has a wonderful melodic sense and was hailed as an avant-garde composer in the latter stages of his life. There are such joys to be found in this five cd box set. It is very well recorded and if you do have a bit of curiosity and you want to find out ore about Satie you can’t go far wrong with this."
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:Da Ponte Operas
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
What David says: 'This EMI box has nine CDs and is a quality release. To have the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform all of these Da Ponte Operas is luxury casting and Ricardo Mutti is a very good conductor of Mozart. For whatever reason this set seems to have been forgotten over the years so this is a fantastic opportunity to snap up an incredible bargain."
Recording of Special Historical Significance
Franz Schubert: Lieder on Record 1898-2012
What David says: "This wonderful EMI box includes an incredible seventeen CDs, all for £44. A total of 339 Schubert songs are featured, and some of the most famous singers over the past 120 years are on this album."
Martha Argerich: Lugano Concertos
What David says: "Martha Argerich is one of the finest pianists of our time and this four CD set provides nearly five hours of lovely concertos. There are nine in total, from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 via the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1, to Bartok’s Piano Concerto No.3 and Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. It really is a terrific set and when you think that these recordings haven’t been issued before you can’t go far wrong with this."
Album of the Week
Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Symphonies 1-3
London Symphony Orchestra
What David says: "I’m spoilt for choice with this album, I love every movement and the there is some really beautiful stuff on this including one of the most lovely and haunting oboe melodies you will ever hear anywhere."
Best for Beginners
Richard Wagner: Twilight of the Gods – The Ultimate Wagner Ring Collection
The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus
What David says: "I love this recording - a wonderful 160 minutes of extracts from The Metropolitan Opera’s Ring Cycle led by Bryn Terfel. It’s all very vivid and I recommend you buy this as it is a fantastic way to get to know Wagner before his 200th anniversary next year."
