Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
Among David Mellor's choices is a superb box set of Yo-Yo Ma's finest recordings.
Yo-Yo Ma recently turned 60 and, to celebrate, Sony have released a 15-album box set of recordings that the American cellist has chosen himself from his more than 80 original albums, recorded between 1979 and 2015.
The set features great works from the repertoire with compositions by 23 different composers. There are no fewer than six Grammy-award winning recordings amongst them as well as Yo-Yo Ma's acclaimed bestsellers – Inspired by Bach and Simply Baroque .
Also tonight David enjoys soprano Amanda Forsythe’s latest album The Power of Love - Arias from Handel Operas. Forsythe joins the acclaimed baroque orchestra Apollo's Fire for an impassioned recording of songs that cover such perennial operatic themes as love, angst and revenge. The recording includes rarely-heard arias and a few favourite chestnuts, drawn from eight of the composer's operas.
David also reviews a box set of the complete Piano Sonatas of Beethoven, played by Ronald Brautigam on the fortepiano. These recordings have been described as 'riveting', 'compelling' and 'revolutionary'.
