David Mellor casts an eye - and an ear - over the latest classical album releases
This week David Mellor offers up a very varied selection of new releases.
There's John Eliot Gardiner ’s recording of Beethoven's Symphony No 2 and No. 8 , which marks the silver anniversary of the Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique, founded by Sir John with the aim of given an authentic reading to the music of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
There's also a new album of light music, and David delights in a recording of Renaud Capucon and Khatia Buniatashvili performing Romantic sonatas for violin and piano – all, extraordinarily, composed within a year in 1886-87. César Franck’s Sonata in A major is one of the finest in the genre, beloved for its soaring melodies and sensuous, light-filled final movement.
