Works by Brahms and Sibelius are among the new recordings coming under David Mellor's scrutiny.
Among this week’s new releases, David has high praise for violinist Janine Jansen’s latest recording of Brahms’s Violin Concerto coupled with the Bartok first Violin Concerto. She recorded the Brahms with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Bartók with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano. Jansen is the first major artist to couple the two works on the same album; she sees them as a natural pairing.
Brahms is also on the menu for the outstanding vocal ensemble Tenebrae who pair his Motets with those by Bruckner. They’ve created a beautiful album with technically impeccable singing.
And Sibelius’s 150th anniversary celebrations continue with a re-issue of the complete symphonies originally released between 1963 and 1968 featuring Lorin Maazel conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. Decca has gone back to the original tapes to make a definitive transfer and present a set which includes the remastered recordings on 4 CDs and a High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray disc.
