Every Saturday night at 9pm-10pm, David Mellor reviews all the latest classical music releases.
David Mellor casts an eye - and his ears - over a superb selection of new releases and re-releases.
This week David marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Aaron Copland with a new recording of his greatest orchestral works by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrew Litton. Copland's ballet scores for Billy the Kid and Rodeo were the result of the composer's search during the early 1930's for a new musical language. In the two ballets, this new direction can be felt in the immediacy of the music, but also in Copland's use of cowboy tunes.
Also tonight, David features the world-premiere CD release of Vladimir Horowitz’s final live recital in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, recorded in 1986. The programme is typical late Horowitz, starting with two Scarlatti sonatas before he revisits favourite Mozart and Scriabin. The album also features two inimitable interviews with the pianist – full of fun, wit and naughtiness.
There’s also a 12-album boxset to enjoy from one of the 20th century’s brightest opera stars, the Pennsylvania-born soprano Anna Moffo who enjoyed a meteoric rise in the 1950s and 1960s that saw her conquer all the major opera houses in Europe and America.
