The New Releases Show, Saturday 18 July 2015, 9pm
Tonight, David showcases a selection of new albums, ranging from the Baroque to classic recordings from the 20th century.
Among David's picks tonight is Martha Argerich's Carte Blanche, the first release in Deutsche Grammophon’s new partnership with the Verbier Festival that will give us two new releases every year of exceptional live concerts from the Festival’s archive. Back in 2007, Martha Argerich was given carte blanche to invite whoever she wanted, to play whatever she and they chose. She was, it's said, the life and soul of the party, playing in seven works and making a rare solo appearance herself in Schumann’s Kinderszenen. Argerich’s A-list artistic partners include Yuri Bashmet, Renaud Capuçon, Lang Lang, Mischa Maisky, Gabriela Montero, and Julian Rachlin.
David also picks out a massive 70-CD box set of Herbert von Karajan’s opera recordings to enjoy, if you have £136 to spare. And Sibelius’s hauntingly beautiful incidental music for a stage version of Belshazzar's Feast is given the performance it deserves on Naxos, courtesy of Leif Segerstram and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra.
